Expressive Portraits: Lessons of the Masters
The portrait paintings of great artists inspire both awe and wonder.
We feel both admiration for the expressions of the artists, and empathy towards the people being portrayed.
We can learn so much about both drawing and ourselves through portraits & portraiture. Drawing & painting people is inspiring. We all love drawing faces and we love the portrait works of great artists.
However, IT IS CHALLENGING!
In this course you will take your inspiration from famous artists as a jumping off point and unleash your own inner artist, while letting go of your inner critic.
If you struggle with drawing and painting heads and features, this course is for you.
This seven week course is for anyone who is interested in learning portraiture, and who wants to free up, and draw more expressively with insight and confidence. There will be an exploration of media and an eual mix of drawing and painting.
I will bring approaches, strategies and methods to portraiture that have been successful with my students in real life. And I'll make use of the unique opportunities that drawing online brings.
I have wanted to do an online course that had all the goodness of my in-person courses. This year, working with amazing models, not only in my backyard but around the globe, I met talented, creative people who also actually have fascinating, costumes available…in their own homes!
I am able to create an ideal line-up of compelling figure models playing ‘themed’ classic portrait subjects such as “The Detective,” “Rococo Duchess” “The Samurai’s Bride” and “Prise & Prejudice.”
With this lineup, I will be able to teach the nuances of portraiture and share years of experience with you.

Seven WEEKS!
Each session will focus on a key concept, taking cues from one artist.
WEEK ONE: Egon Schiele Drawing the portrait with touch to express life and likeness with distortion and caricature. How to 'unstructure' the head.
WEEK TWO: Lucian Freud Learn how to draw the features, how they fit together in the facial structure (if they do)
WEEK THREE: Velasquez and Rembrandt Learn how to make your subjects come alive in their setting. Expressing character with emotion.
WEEK FOUR: Sharaku, Kuniyoshi: Learn stylized expressive portrait and caricature: Drawing with ink, calligraphy, the brush and portraiture
WEEK FIVE: James McNeil Whistler & Berthe Morisot Designing portraits: composition and abstraction. Non finito. The subject and the background. Finished, unfinished and completed
WEEK SIX and SEVEN: Vermeer & Leonardo. UNDERPAINTING AND GLAZING. Seperating the drawing and colouring.
